Communication technology has come a long way since the days of smoke signals and land couriers. Today technology has allowed for us to enjoy a wide range of easily accessible ways to communicate with one another and most times from the comfort of our own homes. The first signs of communication technology was the first telephone system that connected us via circuit switched networks that would allow for communication between to connected phone lines. Then after that came the integrated circuits and transistors. This system was used and can still be found in some places with dial up networks.
Modern phone systems now use digital networks that don’t rely on any physical line to connect any callers together to communicate. Instead fiber optics are used to carry as well as transmit a digital connection. This system can handle thousands of calls all at the same time. This is called the ADSL network or the Asymmetric Digital Subscriber line and it allows us to use phones at the same time we use the Internet.
One of the newest developments in communication technology has been a cheaper and a lot faster network that uses packet switching. This is known as VOIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol. So, instead of using cables or even fiber optics it will use packets or small bits of data that is transmitted via the Internet.
There is also WiFi which is Wireless Fidelity and this is an Internet connection that allows hand held users to get connected quickly by the use of radio signals and having no use for cable wires at all. There also WAP or Wireless Application Protocol that gives access for hand held devices that are programmed with some advanced networking software as well as hardware.
Because of all of the advancements in communication it has started having an impact on education as well. It’s called E-Learning and this is electronic learning. This is an educational system that can be accessed from anywhere on the Internet. This is not only giving people access to learning how to use the latest technologies but it also gives us online tools such as software phones, instant messaging, blogging and much more. Electronic learning is now being incorporated in many college programs where students can take classes online. It has also been implemented in lower schools to keep track of grades, get special tutoring and more.
The pace at which the technology for communication is growing, it doesn’t seem that there will be any end in sight. As good as all of this is, it can be a little bit hard for some people to keep up with. Once they think they’ve finally gotten the newest and latest way to communicate, the item they bought is already out of date.
